As a family run company, Coate Water Care prides itself on being a tight-knit unit whose staff share our vision of providing highly professional and personalised care for people living with dementia.
Founded in 1995, many of the carers at our seven residential care homes in Swindon, Gloucester, Warwickshire and Worcestershire can also count their length of service in decades.
“Coate Water Care have always believed that a strong commitment to training and development is the best way to reward the loyalty of our staff,” says Director of Operations Sue Houldey, “and in turn, that ensures our residents receive the high-quality care they deserve.”
A prime example of Coate Water Care’s long-term investment in its staff is the Future Leaders Programme. The course is aimed at deputy managers and senior carers who wish to develop their skills and expertise ahead of taking on management roles. “Every attendee is nominated by their manager after showing an ability to deliver quality care, so we know we are investing in outstanding human capital!” says Sue.
The Future Leaders Programme takes place over 8 months and the outline is as follows:
- 1. Legislation, regulations and CQC standards + Management styles.
- 2. Care planning and Risk Assessment.
- 3. Medication Management.
- 4. Mental capacity, deprivation of liberty and management of challenging behaviour.
- 5. Recruitment and selection of staff, supervision and appraisal.
- 6. Complaints and understanding investigations.
- 7. Auditing, action planning and improvement.
- 8. Safeguarding and lessons learnt.
Each topic is covered in face-to-face training days with follow-up activities undertaken by attendees in the 6 weeks between each session. Feedback from those attending the course has been extremely positive.
“We want to provide genuine opportunities within our group for those wishing to progress,” says Sue, “so participants in the Future Leaders Programme are provided with additional training and secondments to support their development. It is all part of our investment in staff at all levels and in all types of jobs, and it’s what sets Coate Water Care apart from many other care providers.”
